Is There a Difference Between a Great Showman and a Great Musician?

I'm going to be starting a blog series involving music and bands that have changed lead singers during the course of their careers and what my thoughts are about that. Please keep in mind. These are my thoughts. Not hard and fast rules and not facts. I'm gonna start out the series today by talking about Genesis both with Peter Gabriel and with Phil Collins. This could be a tough one, but probably not.

So let me start off on a positive note. I absolutely love Peter Gabriel. I saw him three years ago when he was in DC and he was phenomenal. I enjoyed the he'll out of that show. I used to have the major "hots" for Peter Gabriel.I'm still capable of getting the "hots",but lately it has more to do with menopause than it does with Peter Gabriel.

Especially since his hair took a vacation. However have you eve looked at somebody and thought , I don't know what it is about them, but there is just something about them that I find so appealing. That's my feelings about Peter Gabriel, hair or no hair. I wouldn't kick him out of bed for eating crackers.

When we wanna talk about a great showman versus a great musician, we really want to take into account the quality of the music. We have already covered ad nauseum the fact that Peter has a special place in my heart. The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway is a theatric dream piece to me.  His work with Genesis is what I would consider very artsy  and very avant-gard ,which is probably one of the reasons I like it so much.

I consider him to be kinda like Dennis DeYoung with the Kilroy Was Here Album or even Bowie. Not afraid to take risks and not married to the typical mainstream that sells. When I saw him 3 years ago he did some of the standards which were the hallmark of his career but he also did a lot of new music which I found to be incredibly gutsy.

I am pretty sure I have gone on long enough about my love for Peter Gabriel. Unfortunately despite that love Genesis would not be Genesis without Phil Collins, not to mention, Mike Rutherford And Tony Banks.

Sunday, I spent my day in a Genesis rabbit hole. It might not sound very appealing to some of you, but to me it was just what the doctor ordered.

The driving drum tracks that accompany so much of the music. I never got to see Genesis live or Phil Collins for that matter and truth be told that might be my one major musical regret- If that is even a thing.

All of these guys are super talented musicians and have had there own measurable success as solo artists as well (that includes Mike Rutherford) who could forget "The Living Years".

While I feel that Peter was the great showman Phil had a little bit of that in him too. I'm grateful for the music of both of them. When I was younger I always used to say I wanted to walk down the aisle and get married to either "In Your Eyes" or "Follow You,Follow Me" - that's pretty high praise. I love alot of music but I never dreamed of walking down the aisle to "Pour Some Sugar On Me" - just saying 😆

In this case I say Peter has my heart and Phil has my musical soul.. I'll be going to bed soon and I'll be listening to ... Genesis - goodnight 😴
